Akhira B. Jeter

Peace and Blessings,

I am @Akhira.BRIllIANT and we are honored and excited to #MOVEBRIllIANTLY with you this 2022-2023 season!

I am originally from Brooklyn, NY though I have received much of my formal dance training in Columbia, SC at the Palmetto Center for the Arts under the direction of Dr. Anne S. Richardson.

I have competed in the Youth American Grand Prix, trained internationally in Kyiv, Ukraine, performed in the American College Dance Festival, and performed in the professional repertory of both the Seán Curran and the Urban Bush Women Dance Company. I have taught and coached in National award-winning dance studios, dance intensives, and non-profit art programs for over 10 years.

I am a certified K-12 Dance Educator and hold my Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance Performance and Choreography from Coker University where I danced and cheered collegiately. I am well versed in many forms of movement such as afro-jazz, classical ballet, contemporary, and modern dance. Upon graduation and marriage, I moved to Manhattan, NY where I performed and taught professionally before returning to SC to pursue my passion of teaching dance in public education.

Since returning to South Carolina, I have had the opportunity to attend the Teaching Dance as Art in Education summer institute at the SC Governor's School for Arts and Humanities. I currently serve as a public school dance educator, amongst the first to make dance education accessible to all students in grades 7-12 in the Chapin community.

It is my philosophy that we must use movement to awaken our brilliance. I am honored to present to you BRilliANTMOVERS & BRIllIANTMUVAZ, intended to stimulate, empower, and nurture the brilliance of all movers through the art of dance.
